Trip to Ireland

In June, I took a well needed break and went home to my home in Co. Cavan, Ireland. I absolutely love going home as it's in the middle of the countryside, somewhat isolated from the outside world, and the only sounds that can be heard are birds singing, bees buzzing, the occasional farm noise and the odd car that might drive down the tiny lane that we live on. A couple of days of this and I was well rested, and of course itching to go out and play some tunes with some of my Irish musician pals!

My brother Lorcán and I decided to take a trip to Ennis, a hot spot for Irish trad. music, for a couple of nights. We stayed with a good friend of ours, Anne-Marie Rynne who plays the fiddle, and hit the town about 8pm looking for a good tune. In Fawl's bar we came across a splendid session hosted by a young banjo player and an older fiddle player. The tunes were lovely and relaxed - just what we needed! At about 11pm we left that session and went along to O'Keefe's where a late session is hosted there by Blackie O'Connell on pipes, Anne-Marie McCormack on fiddle, PJ King on accordion and Cyril O'Donoghue on bouzouki. What a mighty tune we had there! The pub got fairly busy as the night went on, and the tunes kept going steadily to the early hours. I really enjoyed the whole night and got to play lots of tunes I don't normally hear over in Glasgow.
On Saturday I had the pleasure of hosting a session with the lovely fiddler Siobhán Peoples and banjo player/guitarist Dessie Kelliher. The tune started at about 7pm and we played on until the pub shut and we were joined by a variety of musicians from Ennis. It was the perfect session to wind down a lovely weekend of tunes!
I returned to Cavan the next day and spent a few more days at home relaxing and catching up with my family and friends before returning to my busy life in Glasgow. The night before I returned I attended my parents weekly session in Gray's Hotel, Arva. It was a great session, full of old tunes I hadn't played in a bit and I'm looking forward to attending soon again!

Grainne forgot to mention that on the night before her return to Glasgow she joined the session in the local town of Arva and delighted the regular musicians. Hup!!!
